Ela Culminating Writing Piece
In this assignment, you will be paralleling one of the novels that we have read this year to a current day societal issue. You will write a three paragraph essay connecting a novel that we have read in class to an article, and your own life.
I will provide three different articles that you can use for your written piece. You may also find a different article of your choice with teacher approval. You must type up your response and print it out and put it on your digital portfolio by June 1. All students MUST present in class and this is what I will be signing off for your ELA portion of the digital portfolio checklist for SLCs.

What current day societal issue does the article/novel address?
This article “ No One Eats Alone” addresses the issue of bullying, fitting in, and being yourself.
Summarize the main points of the article in one paragraph (4-5 sentences). Cite textual evidence to support your answer.
The article “No One Eats Alone” is about these schools who try their best to not leave anyone out when at lunch and sit with each other. On the third paragraph, it states, “...this program seeks to reverse these trends by asking students to engage in simple and fun ways to include others during lunchtime — making sure no one eats alone, said Laura Talmus, the founder of Beyond Differences.” This explains that this program was made to try to make the people sitting alone not lonely anymore. This program helped for some people and didn’t for some people but there were a lot of successes in not leaving anyone out. On paragraphs 18, 19, and 23 the article states, “Reece called out at least one table of kids sitting with their usual group. But he saw successes, too. Reece and the other student leaders say they saw other examples of kids reaching out.” This explains that there were successes and fails but a lot of people were reaching out and helping a lot.
Compare how the article and the novel address the societal issue in one paragraph (4-5 sentences). Cite textual evidence to support your answer.
In both the article and novel, there were bullying and trying to fit in. In the article, people were sitting by themselves and was wanting to fit in so the “ No One Eats Alone” program started and there were a lot of successes but fails too. Stargirl, from Stargirl, was “bullied” for being unique in her own way and sat by herself at lunch at first. Later on, Leo and his friends started to sit next to her and Stargirl made friends but the failure was that no one liked how goofy she acted so she changed herself but it didn’t really change anything in her school.
How does this issue relate to your own life (4-5 sentences)?
This issue relates to my own life because when I was in fifth grade, there were only two Koreans but I wasn’t close to the other Korean girl so I mainly sat alone at lunch. While everyone was talking to their friends, I just kept quiet and ate my lunch and snacks. One day, a girl named Ana became friends with me so we spent recess and lunch together. Since she knew a lot of people in my class, she introduced me to all her friends and all of us became friends. The rest of the year went well and I also became friends with the other Korean girl and we played together too. That year was the best year of my life!
