Gargoyle 3D Sculpture
1) Which animals did you combine to create your hybrid? Why did you pick these animals/mythical creatures, and which characteristics did you use for each animal?
For my hybrid, I combined a monkey and a dragon because I thought it was unique and it fit well together. I used different parts of the two animals to create my gargoyles. I used monkey characteristics for the face and tail of the hybrid and I used the body, wings, and legs of a dragon.
2)What is symmetry?
Symmetry is when something is symmetrical(the same) when it's folded or reflected.
3)What functional purpose did gargoyles serve in gothic architecture? How did they help preserve the building?
Gargoyles served as a gutter and they had open mouths to let all the rain water out. This was important because it helped preserve the buildings by not letting the water carve away or erode the building.
4)Explain standard "VA.8.2.6 Design both additive and subtractive sculptures." What does it mean, and how did you include both additive and subtractive techniques in your project?
Additive is when you add on to the sculpture and subtractive is when you take away or carve away from the sculpture. I included additive by adding features to the gargoyle such as wings, the tail, tongue, eyeballs, and ears. I used subtractive by carving designs on the sculpture and making holes on the faces for the tongue and the eyeballs.
5)How could you improve your project? Give specific examples with solutions of how you would like to fix them.
I could improve my project by finishing painting my gargoyle and to make it more symmetrical. To do this, I would need to try to use one side I already made as a stencil so that the sculpture would be the same on each side. Also, I could've made my designs better and more arched by putting in more effort in trying to make it look better.
