Pythagorean Theorem Murder Mystery
1) Rewrite the standard in your own words. How does this assignment relate to the standard?
8.G.7 Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find out unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions. 8.G.6 Explain a proof of the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse. This standard relates to the assignment because for this project, I had to find out the missing hypotenuse of the each of the three towers to the person. There were the lengths of how tall the tower was to how far the person was away from the bottom of the tower for each of the towers. By using the two lengths of one tower, I used the Pythagorean Theorem (a^2+b^2=c^2).
2) What are the steps you took to complete and do well on this assignment?
The steps I took to complete and do well on this assignment was to know how to solve the hypotenuse of a triangle. I used the formula a^2+b^2=c^2 and took two legs of the triangle made from the tower to the person that was shot and plugged it in the formula. After that, I had to show work on the paper so I showed how I got the answer. Next, I had to find out from which tower the shooter shot Mr. Jackson and after I figured it out, I wrote out why the answer was the shooter Consuelo Rubio.
3) This assignment demonstrates the following strengths...
This assignment shows that I know how to solve for the hypotenuse of a triangle by knowing the formula and the two legs of the triangle. Also, it shows that I can find out who did the crime by just measuring the height of the tower and the length of how far someone was.
4) I could have improved my work on this assignment by.
I could have improved on this assignment by making by being a little more creative by actually drawing buildings and show the lengths in the picture. This would've given people a clearer vision of how the case might have looked like. I also could've been more descriptive for the description of why and how I got the answer to be Consuelo Rubio.
5) How will you apply the skills you learned from this assignment in either the real world when you are an adult or in other classes while you are still a student?
I can apply the skills I learned from this assignment to the real world when I need to find out how far something is from the something to something creating a triangle and I only know the legs. In this situation, I can use the Pythagorean Theorem formula find out the how far they two things are. Another way I can apply this assignment to when I grow up is when I am an investigator and I need to give evidence on why I got the answer or if I have to give facts of what the case was.
