relation vs. function
1) Rewrite the standard in your own words. How does this assignment relate to the standard?
8.F.1 Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input only one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.1 This assignment relates to the standard because in the standard, it says that a function has only one output to an input. In this assignment, I needed to use that rule to define if the relation was a function or not.
2) What are the steps you took to complete and do well on this assignment?
The steps I took to complete and do well on this assignment was to know how to tell if a relation was a function or just a relation. I had to use different ways to tell if the relation was a function. For the graphs, I needed to see if it passed the vertical line test. For tables and the sets of ordered pairs, I needed to make sure that all the domains were different. For the circle maps, I needed to make sure that one input have only one output.
3) This assignment demonstrates the following strengths...
This assignment demonstrates that I can tell the difference of functions and relations. Also, it demonstrates that I can use different methods to figure out if the relations are a function. Also, it demonstrates that I know what kind of methods to use according to the different types of charts and graphs.
4) I could have improved my work on this assignment by...
I could've improved on actually taking my time trying different methods for some of the relations because I would sometimes get it wrong and it would sometimes take a long time to solve one of the relations. Also, I could've listened to Ms. Diaz and made a T-Chart instead of just gluing the whole paper without cutting it.
5) How will you apply the skills you learned from this assignment in either the real world when you are an adult or in other classes while you are still a student?
I will apply the skills I learned from this assignment when I am in a business and I need to find sales as a function of price. Also, I can use functions and relations in physics. For example, function of mass and acceleration and energy as a function of mass and the speed of light.
